Reason being.
Back Links were a part of Google’s Algorithm from the start. If they don’t know this they should not even pretend.

Other professors “cited” their work often. In a sense… pointing to it for reference.
Hence… where the term… “Citations” in local seo came from.

Bad Back-Links can hurt you because Google might think you are trying to pull one over on them.
