Facebook Ads and The Newspaper Concept
Last week Facebook made the announcement about changes to the newsfeed.
I won’t go into the details. You can find plenty of info on it.
One thing we kept hearing over and over again was…
“The Newsfeed is your personal newspaper.”
“It’s a newspaper specific and relevant to each user.”
Newspaper!
Interesting how the more things change the more they stay the same.
For a very long time Newspapers were our main source of information.
Then – we would discuss that news with people important to us.
Facebook’s Newspaper is not just “news.”
It’s everything.
“Hard news.” (You can see links to real news stories)
News from friends.
And news from businesses whose pages you have liked.
So let’s focus on the “News From Businesses” part.
Here’s the question…
Are you really, (Come on really), leveraging this “newsfeed?”
When I owned my brick and mortar biz in South Philly I used to place ads almost 40 weeks a year in the local community paper.
I would budget at least $200 to $300 per week for 1/8th to 1/4th page ads.
They worked.
If I couldn’t cover it based on the increase in business I wouldn’t do it.
Why did they work?
Simple…
1- I had the right eye-balls looking at the ad. Meaning: The fact was my “suspects” (the people I wanted to do business with) read that paper religiously.
2- Because of my experience and willingness not to “quit” when I first started I developed the ability to write good ads.
I studied marketing.
I learned how to write headlines, offers and layout good newspapers ads too.
The more I did it. The more I tested it. And the more I kept learning the better I got!
What really depresses me is the amount of “Confusion” surrounding Facebook Ads.
Don’t over complicate it!
It really is a personal newspaper just like Zuck says.
It’s just so much more powerful now.
Why?
For one – there are plenty of eye-balls!
But you have the power to really target.
My newspaper ads went to everyone back in those days. People who were really not my “suspects.”
That’s waste!
With Facebook – you won’t get much waste. That’s how powerful the targeting is.
Plus – you have the ability to “organize a following.”
What that really means is once a user “likes” your page – FB gives you the ability to re-target them directly.
OK – that’s it for now.
