Last week we talked about some online marketing companies who were fined for trying to “game” the local online review system.

Basically…

Promising clients “amazing” results by guaranteeing them tons of reviews.

What they did was hire people in the Philippines to write reviews.

Complicated too.

Among other things they told these “hires” to be sure to log in from different IP addresses.

All this begs the question…

Why try to game the system?

I’ll tell you why.

Because local online reviews are a good thing.

When it comes to “Local Rankings” reviews help.

So – when anything works there will always be people who try to take shortcuts.

The fact is… Getting reviews is not an easy thing.

Only 1 in 15 customers will actually give you a review when you ask for one.

Naturally, many factors can increase your odds of getting a good review beyond just asking.

A few ideas…

Have a pre-written (but customizable) email that makes it easy to remind them.

Be sure to ask them right away after they compliment you.

Add a “review engine” to your website and add a line in your email signature with a reminder.

Lastly… be sure all of your directory listings are owner-verified.

OK, that’s it for now. More another time.
